What actually makes student housing work?
Is it efficiency?
Is it density?
Or is it how a space supports the way students actually live day to day?
We’ve been exploring this while leading the interior design for a student housing project at Weber State University.
Students don’t experience a building in plans or square footage. They experience it through the spaces they move through constantly - corridors, lounges, study areas, and the small in-between moments that shape their routine.
So the real questions shift:
- Where do students naturally gather, and why?
- What makes a shared space feel inviting instead of overlooked?
- How do materials, lighting, and layout influence whether a space gets used or ignored?
At this scale, interiors do more than finish a building, they define how it performs. We’ve been designing with that in mind. Creating spaces that feel intuitive, durable, and considered, while still supporting the realities of student living.
What do you believe has the biggest impact on student housing experience? -
Childcare design sits at the intersection of building code, state licensing, supervision guidelines, plumbing ratios, and layered security standards. Before a single design decision is made, the regulatory framework has already shaped the building.
Most commercial projects do not come with that kind of complexity baked in from the start. What stood out to us on the Lehi Childcare Facility is how often those constraints led to better design outcomes.
Here is what we learned:
1. Direct Outdoor Access from Every Classroom
State licensing requires each classroom to have direct access to the exterior. At first glance, that reads like a compliance item, but in practice, it improves the building design since now every classroom now has its own connection to the outdoors. What started as a regulation became an architectural advantage.
2. Supervision Through Intentional Sightlines
Childcare environments demand constant visual oversight between rooms, corridors, and activity areas. Our solution was simple - windows flanking each classroom door. The requirement is met, but the result is more than functional, it allows for the building to feel transparent and connected.
3. Layered but Welcoming Security
Controlled access is a non-negotiable, but a facility that feels like a checkpoint is the wrong first impression for families. We incorporated a controlled entry vestibule where parents check in at an iPad station before accessing the rest of the facility.
The best constraints do not limit good design. They shape and focus it.
Projects like this remind us that thoughtful architecture is about responsibility, clarity, and solving problems in ways that improve the experience for everyone who walks through the door. -

Highland Spring Speciality Clinic Blog
As mental health professionals at Highland Springs Specialty Clinic, we frequently observe how the winter months affect our clients' emotional well-being, particularly here in Utah and Idaho where seasonal changes are pronounced. The intersection of seasonal mood variations and family dynamics presents a fascinating context for exploration, especially in helping our clients build resilient support systems.
The Clinical Significance of Seasonal Changes
From a neurobiological perspective, winter's reduced photoperiod (shortened daylight hours) significantly impacts our circadian rhythms and neurotransmitter production. The reduction in natural light exposure affects the brain's production of serotonin while potentially increasing melatonin, creating biochemical changes that can influence mood regulation and energy levels.
Family Systems as Therapeutic Support
In our clinical practice, we've observed that strong family connections serve as a crucial protective factor against seasonal mood disruptions. Research in family systems therapy consistently demonstrates:
Neurobiological Benefits
Social connections, particularly with family members, stimulate the production of oxytocin and other neurochemicals that help regulate stress responses. These biological processes can help counteract some of the neurochemical imbalances associated with seasonal changes.
Attachment & Security
Secure family relationships provide what attachment theory describes as a "secure base" from which individuals can better manage environmental stressors. This is particularly relevant during winter months when external pressures may increase.
Behavioral Activation
Family involvement naturally promotes behavioral activation – a key therapeutic technique we often recommend for managing mood changes. This can help maintain healthy activity levels even when winter weather might otherwise promote isolation. By deliberately practicing certain behaviors, people can ‘activate’ a positive emotional state. Some of the most useful categories to consider when implementing behavioral activation include those that: increase pleasure and meaning, replace unhelpful behaviors, and improve relationships.
Evidence-Based Strategies for Strengthening Family Connections
Through our work at Highland Springs Specialty Clinic, we've identified several evidence-based approaches for enhancing family support systems:
Structured Quality Time Research indicates that intentional, regular family interactions are more beneficial than sporadic, unstructured time. We recommend scheduling dedicated family time, particularly during daylight hours when possible.
Mindful Communication practices implementing specific communication techniques, such as reflective listening and validation, can significantly improve family dynamics and emotional support capabilities.
Shared Wellness Activities engaging in joint health-promoting activities can serve multiple therapeutic purposes, addressing both physical and emotional well-being while strengthening relationships.
Regional Considerations for Utah and Idaho Residents
Living in the Mountain West presents unique opportunities and challenges for maintaining family connections during winter:
The region's emphasis on outdoor recreation can be leveraged for family bonding, even in winter months
Our communities' strong family-oriented culture provides numerous opportunities for structured support
Local recreational facilities and community centers offer indoor alternatives when weather is prohibitive
Professional Support and Resources
At Highland Springs Specialty Clinic, we recognize that while family support is fundamental, some situations benefit from professional guidance. Our clinicians are specifically trained in:
Family systems therapy
Seasonal affective disorder treatment
Attachment-based interventions
Evidence-based mood regulation techniques
Clinical Recommendations for Building Resilient Support Systems
Based on our clinical experience, we recommend:
Regular assessment of family communication patterns
Development of specific support protocols for challenging periods and regular evaluation and adjustment of support strategies
Integration of both structured and spontaneous family interactions
Moving Forward
As mental health professionals, we understand that building and maintaining strong family connections requires both intention and skill. The winter months, while challenging, can serve as a catalyst for strengthening these vital relationships.

Let’s face it, long-term relationships take work. The butterflies may not flutter quite as intensely after years together, and the daily grind can leave us feeling more like roommates than soulmates. But here’s the secret: the spark isn’t gone forever! Couples counseling can be the key to rekindling that flame and rediscovering the joy and passion in your relationship.
Why Does Love Fade?
Life throws us curveballs. The initial excitement of a new relationship can fade as we navigate careers, finances, children, and the inevitable changes that come with time. Communication can break down, leading to misunderstandings and resentment. We may even forget how to prioritize our relationship amidst the daily hustle.
The Power of Couples Counseling
Couples counseling is a safe and supportive space to address these challenges. A therapist can help you:
Communicate Effectively: Learn healthy communication skills to express needs, listen actively, and resolve conflict productively.
Rekindle Intimacy: Explore ways to rebuild emotional and physical intimacy that may have waned over time.
Navigate Life Transitions: Work through challenges that come with major life changes, like empty nest syndrome or caring for aging parents.
Rediscover Shared Values: Remember what brought you together in the first place and strengthen your connection.
Love Stories Rekindled
It’s a myth that couples counseling is only for relationships on the brink of collapse. Many couples use therapy to proactively strengthen their bond and prevent future problems. Consider these success stories:
Sarah and John, married for 20 years, felt distant after raising their children. Therapy helped them rediscover their fun-loving side and prioritize date nights.
David and Emily sought counseling to navigate a career change that caused stress in their relationship. Therapy helped them communicate openly and support each other through the transition.
It’s Never Too Late to Reignite the Spark
No matter how long you’ve been together, couples counseling can be a transformative experience. It’s an investment in your relationship and your happiness. Here Highland Springs Specialty Clinics, our experienced therapists are passionate about helping couples reconnect and rekindle the love they once shared.
Take the first step towards a more fulfilling relationship. Contact us today for a free consultation!

September is a special month dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about recovery. While often associated with addiction recovery, this month is also an ideal time to reflect on the concept of recovery in the general context of mental health. We will explore the significance of Recovery Month and the importance of adopting a gentle approach to healing oneself mentally.
The Gentle Recovery Approach
In our fast-paced, high-pressure world, we often push ourselves relentlessly. We expect quick fixes and instant results, even when it comes to our mental well-being. However, a gentler approach to recovery emphasizes patience, self-compassion, and understanding. Here’s why it matters:
Embracing Self-Compassion: The journey to mental well-being begins with self-compassion. Instead of berating ourselves for perceived shortcomings or past mistakes, a gentle recovery approach encourages us to treat ourselves with kindness and understanding. It’s about recognizing that we’re doing the best we can with the tools we have.
Fostering Resilience: Life can be incredibly challenging, and everyone faces adversity at some point. A gentle approach to recovery helps us build resilience. It allows us to acknowledge our struggles, learn from them, and emerge stronger and more resilient.
Promoting Self-Care: Gentle recovery includes self-care practices that nourish the mind, body, and soul. This can involve activities like meditation, mindfulness, regular exercise, journaling, and seeking therapy when needed. Prioritizing self-care is a vital part of maintaining good mental health.
Embracing the Journey: Recovery is not a destination; it’s a journey. A gentle approach acknowledges that progress can be nonlinear. There may be setbacks, but they are opportunities for growth and learning. It’s about embracing the process, not fixating on the outcome.
Taking the First Steps
If you’re considering a gentle approach to your mental health recovery, start by setting realistic goals. These goals should reflect your personal growth and well-being rather than external expectations. Surround yourself with a supportive community of friends, family, or mental health professionals who understand and encourage your journey.
Practice self-awareness by tuning in to your emotions, thoughts, and triggers. This self-awareness can help you identify areas where you need support and where you can implement self-care routines. Finally, remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Whether it’s seeking therapy, joining support groups, or confiding in a trusted friend, reaching out for support is a crucial step in a gentle mental health recovery journey. Remember, you are deserving of kindness and understanding as you navigate your unique path to mental wellness.
